Аннотация: This article analyzed two problems: science as a social institution and its characteristics, and science as a constructivist form of cognition. The first problem is central to the sociology of science, while the second is central to the theory of scientific knowledge or epistemology. It is also shown that these problems are interconnected, as they represent different aspects of a more general problem: viewing science as a socially constructive cognitive activity. Sociology examines science as a specific social-cognitive system, the purpose of which is the production and application of scientific knowledge. It focuses on the role and functions of scientific communication within a disciplinary scientific community as the primary actor in scientific activity. The subject of epistemology is the nature of scientific knowledge, its structure and methods for constructing various units of scientific knowledge. The common foundation for the sociology of science and epistemology is the recognition of the social nature of scientific activity and the fundamental role of scientific consensus in generating and legitimizing any results of scientific activity, including the assessment of their cognitive and practical significance.
