Аннотация: This article examines the influence of Franz Kafka’s prose on the work of an American filmmaker David Lynch through the example of Eraserhead. Particular attention is paid to the film’s connection with Kafka’s novella The Metamorphosis. The analysis identifies the ways in which themes of alienation, anxiety, and identity crisis are reinterpreted, and assesses the role of the chronotope in constructing a Kafkaesque atmosphere. Through an examination of the historical and cultural context of Kafka’s era, the study outlines the conceptual framework of his artistic devices and distinctive aesthetics. Central to this framework is the specific organization of space and time, manifested in a unique Kafkaesque architectural chronotope composed of labyrinths, corridors, and enclosed spaces. The unique concept of the “Kafkaesque” is defined here as a model of absurd perception of reality governed by concealed higher authorities. Drawing on the works of literary and cultural scholars, the article demonstrates that Kafka’s prose contains an inherent “visual method” and is particularly receptive to translation into the language of cinema.
